Backyard chicken proposal skirts South Bayview wards

A proposed pilot project that would allow residents in four wards to raise chickens in their backyards will skirt wards in the South Bayview area. City Council pondered the issue Monday and deferred a vote to today. The young Patel brothers, Andrew and Matthew, had hoped to see the inclusion of at least Ward 26 (Leaside) where they have had chickens for many years in their parents yard at Sutherland Drive and Southlea Ave. They even won blue ribbons at the agriculture fair for their work. Tuesday’s motion would authorize chickens (but no noisy roosters) in Ward 5 Etobicoke-Lakeshore, Ward 13 Parkdale-High Park, Ward 21 St. Paul’s and Ward 32 Beaches East York. The St. Paul’s boundary on the east is Spadina Rd.  The proposal also would require residents participating in the program to register with the city and permit staff to “attend and inspect” their properties “as deemed necessary.” If approved, the pilot project would take place over a period of up to three years with an interim review slated for 18 months from now. Leaside brothers still hope to see legal backyard chickens

Blessing animals, native garden and a blood clinic reminder

St. Cuthbert’s Anglican Church blessed the animals Saturday and (top left) Reverend Ian LaFleur was warmly thanked by one dear creature for his ministering. The young lady to the right brought her friend along. Centre left, this gathering of friends at Manor Road United Church marked the presentation of the Ontario 150 Native Garden plaque to the MRUC Messy Church Youth Group. It was installed over the garden they planted last Spring. It looks like a happy event as seen below in the video from that occasion. Looking ahead, the vital public duty of giving blood is at hand. The Leaside Blood Donor clinic is Wednesday at Northlea Public School on Rumsey Road. Then a final glimpse of the successful Apple Fest weekend on Bayview Ave. Here we see four stalwarts from the pixies who look keep the street green.

To the right is a tease of some wonderful pictures seen here taken in 2015 by Bob and Judy Arsenault of Leaside.

Junior Wildcats defeat Kingston Ice Wolves 3-1 in Leaside

Leaside Junior Wildcats won their home tilt against the Kingston Ice Wolves 3-1 Saturday night at the Millwood Rd. arean. The win takes the Wildcats four games in on the fresh PWHL season with two wins and two ties. Although still unbeaten, the box score of the Kingston game reveals the Cats struggled for two periods before scoring and then needed a power play to get the first marker. Veteran Captain Kristin Della Rovere scored at 1.55 of the third assisted by Katie Wilkinson and Quinn Johnston. Mackenzie MacDonald scored at 13.02 assisted by Quinn Johnston and Sarah Brooks sent a lazy shot down the ice from the Cats zone into an empty Kingston net to register the third goal. Shots on goal are informative. Kingston more than doubled the shots fired at Leaside goalie Alysha Letwin (27) over those faced by Kaitlyn Evelyn (13).

SUNDAY

Sunday at home the Wildcats fought three periods and overtime to finish 1-1 against the Toronto Aeros (York U). Once again the lopsided shots on goal jumped out. Alysha Letwin faced 34 from Toronto while the Aeros Natalie Thompson had to deal with merely 14.
