Five injured in Edmonton as police allege terror attack

A man is in custody and an Islamic State has been seized from a truck he was driving after five people, including a police officer, were injured in an apparent attempt to drive the vehicle into crowds at a football game in Edmonton. The U-Haul truck struck people as it sped down Jasper Avenue, Edmonton police chief Rod Knetch told Canadian Press. The suspect is in custody and appears to have acted alone and no one appears to have been seriously hurt. An Islamic State flag that was inside the suspect’s vehicle had been seized and was part of the investigation, which now involves the local RCMP-led Integrated National Security Enforcement Team, a counter-terrorism unit. This all happened in the early evening near Commonwealth Stadium, where a police officer was handling traffic-control duties outside the Edmonton Eskimos-Blue Bombers game. The game was military appreciation night.

Musicians were plentiful on both sides of the street and a favorite player from the Guitar Guys ensemble played solo violin outside Smokin’ Cigar. Nibblies and generous meals were on sale. Toronto photo mix at Invictus, Kensington and Dundas Sq

An exciting moment gripped former US president Barack Obama and Prince Harry at the Invictus Games Friday as the US wheelchair basketball team defeated France. Upper right, Toronto is before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in its attempt to shut down perhaps the largest and most aggressive of the illegal marijuana dispensaries. The arguments are vexing some people. The City says the shops are illegal by definition but Canna Clinic goes to a higher authority, saying the Constitution will be violated if those needing its medical assistance with the best weed are denied access. Chief Saunders to get kidney transplant gift from wife

Police Chief Mark Saunders has been diagnosed with kidney disease and will receive a transplant from his own wife. Remarkable good luck has proven her to be a perfect match for the chief in this regard. And as police personnel said today “in more ways than one”. Saunders told his story to CTV today with his wife at his side. “The stars aligned for me,” he said, seated next to his wife in their west-end home on Friday. He said that in the late 1990s he discovered he had been living with one good kidney and one which was ailing. It was not the result of a “lifestyle issue” he said, but merely something he was born with. “Later on, it turned out that the other kidney had kidney disease,” he said. The chief has been on home dialysis for 15 months. The operation will take place Monday.
