Computer, cell phone service set for 465 Manor Road

The little (285 square foot) hole-in-the-wall at 465 Manor Rd. just off Bayview will soon be a computer and cell phone service shop. It is an addition which will be welcome if all reports are correct. The new tenant is said to have run a similar business in Oakville and will move in quickly. The long-time owner of the antique clock business moved out at the end of October. Rent for this postage stamp by the way was shown as $1,450 a month.

Wildcats take tie and a loss against tough PWHL leaders

Leaside Wildcats lost 1-0 to the Whitby Wolves Sunday at Iroquois Arena in Whitby. It was a match between two battle-seasoned teams as the Provincial Women’s Hockey League season heads into its final weeks. Leaside outshot Whitby by 30 to 17. Saturday night, Wildcats fought another perennial contenders Durham West Lightning to a 1-1 tie at Ajax Community Centre.

Sunday fog to dissipate by mid-day but air travel slow

Toronto is under fog Sunday and drivers are warned to be careful. Environment Canada issued a fog advisory Saturday night that remained in effect Sunday morning. But it says the fog is expected to lift later on Sunday morning. Air travellers are advised to check on the status of their flights before heading to the airport because of possible delays and cancellations. Photos from across the City showed a fog that forced delays at Toronto Pearson Airport. Photos from Tom Podolec filed to CTV show a traffic-snarling blanket. Podolec reported on Twitter that flights were going around and taking more than one attempt to land.

Trudeau talks with Trump in “constructive conversation”

With many Canadians holding their breath about what the Trump presidency may mean for the auto industry and much else in Canada-US trade, word has come that the PM has spoken with Mr. Trump by phone. The Prime Minister’s Office says the two men communicated Saturday for a period of time, but the length was not specified. The PMO said in an email that Trudeau noted the depth of the economic relationship, with 35 states having Canada as their top export market. Trump’s spokesman Sean Spicer said “the president had a constructive conversation with prime minister Trudeau of Canada about strengthening the relationship between our two nations.” Spicer said the men also discussed setting up additional meetings in the days to come, which he said the U.S. will follow up on. On Sunday, David MacNaughton, Canada’s ambassador to the United States, told the CBC that preliminary discussions with the Trump transition team have been positive, and Canada is not “at all” the target of Trump’s trade rhetoric.

Zero visibility predicted as heavy fog rolls into Toronto

Environment Canada has issued a warning of widespread fog across Toronto tonight into Sunday morning. It is expected to bring zero or near-zero visibility and at times “hazardous” travel conditions. The warning includes the City and the surrounding regions of York, Durham, Halton and Peel. Drivers are cautioned to slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop if visibility drops while they’re on the roads.

March from Legislature to City Hall protests Trump

PROTESTS IN WASHINGTON, CHICAGO AND EUROPE

Marches and protests of different size turnouts have been held in Washington, Chicago and some European cities to protest Donald Trump. The CBC story reports a “Massive” turnout but the numbers are unstated at this stage. In London, some 5,000 women march against Trump and against Brexit. CBC

Trump tells Germans he will slap big tax on Deutsche cars

Donald Trump has been interviewed by Bild, the large German newspaper. He told it that he plans to impose a 35% import tax on Mercedes, BMW and VWs if the vehicles are not made in the U.S. It is a bold perhaps impossible threat but it had a chilling effect Friday on German business. In Canada, these cars are enormously popular but it is even truer here that the Germans have not invested locally. Unlike the Japanese Big Two, Toyota and Honda, who have plants in Ontario,  German carmakers have never assembled a car in this country.  CBC

Hockey, a Leaf veteran and hey, the wood chips are on fire

This small gallery of South Bayview sights on Saturday reveals the wood chip pile in Sandy Bruce off-leash park smouldering away. Wood chips will do that when they’re wet. The gang from TFS rummaged through the hill (helped by dogs) to find the source. At Leaside arena Matthew met Mike (Krushelnyski) at the PhysioMed event and got his autograph. And the Red shirted pee wees battled the Gold shirts to a score that is unreportable but not important because, as is known, the game is the thing.

Yorkville chase shut down as Range Rover man goes crazy

Police wisely called off a brief chase yesterday (Friday) when a man in a Range Rover caused mayhem on Yorkville, Cumberland, Bay and Bloor before fleeing from the vehicle. Among other damage, he knocked down a lamp standard. A presumption may be made that the vehicle was stolen. It has plates and would not be hard to trace. The incident had pedestrians running for cover as the lunatic driver drove down sidewalks among other illegal and reckless behaviour.

O’Leary tells London reporter he will repeal carbon tax

Conservative Party leadership candidate Kevin O’Leary is promising to eliminate the carbon tax within days of his arrival in office if he’s elected as prime minister. “Repeal the carbon tax as fast as I can – everywhere,” he said while speaking with London, Ontario radio reporter Andrew Lawton Friday.

“Clerical error” frees violent and dangerous offender

A clerical error at a Toronto courthouse is being blamed for the escape from custody of a man police call violent and dangerous. He is 36-year-old Lingathasan Suntharamoorthy, now sought on a Canada-wide warrant. He left the Toronto East courthouse Friday morning and is now unlawfully at large. He should not approached if seen. Suntharamoorthy is described as five-foot-10, with a medium build, and short black hair. “He is known to be violent and dangerous,” police say in their release issued a dinner time. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-4200 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
