“Drone” at 9,000 feet imperils Porter flight over City
by •
Porter Airlines says it suspects it was a drone flying at the altitude of aircraft — 9,000 — that imperiled one of its flights arriving at Billy Bishop Airport on Monday morning. The Transportation Safety Board is on the job with an account from the pilots that their flight was on a collision course with the object before they went into a dive to avoid it. This occurred about 7:30 a.m “A Porter aircraft was on its initial approach to Billy Bishop airport for landing. It was at an altitude of approximately 9,000 feet over Lake Ontario near Pickering when the pilots noticed an object in the distance,” Porter spokesman Brad Cicero said. “As they approached the object, they realized it was very close to their flight path and decided to take appropriate evasive action. There was no contact between the aircraft and object.” Cicero said the pilots initially thought the object was a balloon, but the airline says it could have been a drone. Two flight attendants received minor injuries as the aircraft performed evasive manoeuvres, but none of the 54 passengers were hurt.
Afternoon traffic west backed up from Bayview to Rumsey

Digging in the middle of Eglinton outside Sunnybrook Plaza was causing huge backups of afternoon traffic Monday as traffic westbound was reduced to a single lane. Don’t fret. Someday you will able to get to the Rouge River by LRT in mere seconds. There’s something to tell your children.

WORLD: Stranded cows stun rescuers in New Zealand
by •
Pictures of cows stranded on a tiny piece of what was their pasture after the New Zealand earthquakes have stunned rescuers. “That is amazing,” said a chopper pilot as he flew over the cattle perched on their earthen tower at Kaikoura near Christchurch. Also in your World, a summary by Euronews of the Donald Trump transition. It is informative. And in Perth, Australia, the Wildcats basketball team and 11,000 fans have participated in a huge performance of the “mannequin challenge” craze. Hey, whatever works for you.

Is the “Supermoon” just a big ball of media baloney?
by •
Yes the moon is a blessing, lovely to look at and an inspiration to men and women in the ways of making love, music and madness. But is the moon a single bit different today and tomorrow (November 13 and 14, 2016) in its Supermoon get-up than it is on any other occasion at its fullness? According to some reports we have NASA saying things like the moon will be the closest to earth this time than it has been since 1948. But then again, in other reports, maybe it will only “the brightest” since 1948. Or maybe it will only be the biggest-looking. Are you beginning to wonder about this stuff?
HOW CLOSE IS CLOSE?
Dr. Kelly Lepo at the McGill Space Institute is certainly throwing cold water on the experience. He says you probably won’t notice much difference. But is the moon really closer to earth than it has been in decades? How would that work? Even for laymen who know that the moon orbits around earth elliptically it seems a stretch. And then there’s Leaside gadfly and man of many parts Rudy Limeback who was using colourful language on Twitter to dismiss the idea that the moon will be “closer” than normal.
oh, please!!! the moon gets that close EVERY MONTH!!!
it's just not always 100% full when that happens@SPACEdotcom #space— Rudy Limeback (@rudydotca) November 12, 2016

Liberals ran a poll to learn people hated power rates
by •
It is being reported that the Ontario’s Liberal government commissioned a poll which showed that 94 per cent of residents were eager for relief from the cost of electricity. Then they pledged to lower rates. The poll’s outcome can hardly be news to anyone. The process seems a lot like asking people if taxes are too high. What seems just too unfortunate is that the government couldn’t figure out that it has driven the cost of power in Ontario to crushingly high levels without a poll. Were they expecting results which said rates were just ducky? CBC
Reader is excited to see how Laird and Eglinton transforms
by •
Reader “KSnider” has commented that Laird in Focus is of interest because Laird and Eglinton “is a useful nexus for residents as far away as Yonge & Eg to use as a retail and services area. There are tens of thousands of apartment and condo residents geared up to spend even more time in that area post-crosstown construction. The area needs to be zoned appropriately to accommodate all those people, and the commerce it will provide. I’m excited to see how the area will transform. :)” Thanks for the opinion.
