Laird in Focus? Open House attempts to sharpen image

There’s will be a series of public presentations conducted within a single meeting at Leaside United Church on Wednesday, November 30, 2016. It is about the future of Laird Drive and the lands on the southeast corner of Eglinton East and Laird. That’s the RioCan Leaside Centre and property to the east. It is called Laird in Focus and it will begin at 4 p.m. in an “open house” context with presentations on the hour until 8 p.m. It seems this is less a chance to tell the City what you might like than simply be told what the planers are intending to do — within their power — the land is all privately owned. They say the intent is to “develop a planning framework to guide future development for the Laird Focus Area that also includes the Mixed Use Areas along the west side of Laird Drive.” Read it all here.

Amazon told to pay millions after kids buy virtual apps

A judge in Washington state has ordered Amazon to pay refunds to the parents of children who made in-app purchases on Kindle and Android devices without their consent between 2011 and 2014. Seems the kids didn’t know the difference between “virtual money” (whatever that is) and hard cash that mom and dad had to find somewhere. Fancy that. Judge John Coughenour ordered the firm to run the refund process for 12 months beginning in January 2017. The decision comes as the result of legal action by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). However the FTC’s call for a lump refund of $25.6m U.S. was rejected. He also turned down Amazon’s request to offer reimbursement in the form of gift cards.  The option of paying for extra content inside mobile apps such as games and music platforms was launched by Amazon and other platforms in 2011. Parents complained that it was too easy for children to make purchases, either by accident or without authorisation, while playing game — with BBC

Sights, sounds, friends, neighbours at St. Cuthbert’s Fair

St .Cuthbert’s Christmas Fair was a busy event Saturday with wonderful oddments and other things not so odd for sale. The South Bayview Bulldog chose Hermit Cookies for the office (not the lifestyle) at the bake counter. Lorna Krawchuk confirmed the number waiting outside Lamb Hall at 11 a.m. opening was 224 this chilly morning and that one man was waiting there at 8.30 or so when she arrived to turn on the coffee makers. Hope you got the bargain you were looking for sir. This is the scene inside the main meeting room/auditorium during lunch.

Diwali, the Indian Festival of Lights recently celebrated will be the focus of a CNN program this week. There are some lovely images in the promotional video. Equally enchanting are images of a new polar bear at the Chicago Zoo.
