“Denial of service” makes Twitter, Tumblr unreachable

Several websites including Twitter and Tumblr were unreachable during an extended period for many U.S. internet users Friday following repeated online attacks. Web-technology provider Dynamic Network Services Inc., known as Dyn, said its domain name system, or DNS, service was subject to a massive distributed denial-of-service attack starting at 7:10 a.m. on Friday. After the first attack was resolved, Dyn reported a second one around midday. The service was spotty towards afternoon but was generally up by 4.30 p.m. Wall Street Journal
CGS students follow “Daily Five” program to literacy

“Yes, Daily Five”
“Yes, Daily Five!!!” These are the words you hear echoing through the Grade 1 classroom at Children’s Garden School when it’s time for ‘read to self,’ one of the five components of The Daily Five program (a program that fosters independence in literacy). The other four components are: read to someone, work on writing, listen to reading and word work. The Grade 1s at CGS are currently focusing on ‘read to self’. They are doing a great job of building their reading stamina and applying new reading strategies.
To help make reading fun for this active age group, Kara Greenwood, Grade 1 teacher at CGS, is employing all sorts of creative tools to help the children meet challenges that come up when reading and writing on their own. Students recently learned the reading strategy of flipping the vowel sound. If they are stuck on a word that just doesn’t sound right, they now know to try both the long and short vowel sounds. To help them remember to apply this strategy each student made their very own Flippy the Dolphin.
Learning to rhyme and “flip” vowels
The Grade 1s have also been working on rhyming. They had a great time making their very own magic wands (just like the wand found in the story Emeraldalicious) to help them come up with rhymes. The children enjoyed the story and figuring out that the wand only granted magic wishes that rhymed.

Making learning fun isn’t limited to literacy in the Grade 1 classroom, students have also been learning their 10 facts with the help of a magic rainbow! If they follow the rainbow (and the numbers that correspond with each colour) they will make a ten fact. The students are making their own 10 fact rainbows to be turned into placemats to take home this week.

When you regularly threaten nuclear war and frequently kill off your own associates, there’s always a chance someone might try to assassinate you. According to CNN, the South Korean government says it has a plan to take out the quirky North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un (Stable) and so do some of his nervous elite. He’s bumped off 64 of them so far this year.
Also in Your World Friday, Filipino expatriates, of whom there are a lot in Canada, may be wondering what’s going on back home. The new president, Rodrigo Duterte, has turned on the U.S. and embraced China. He says he may also ally himself with Putin. And Shania Twain has been honoured at the Country Music Television Artists of the Year awards giving her a chance to reflect on her long career.
Day and night, carry your “pedestrian walking permit”

The unwelcome series of before-and-after daylight pedestrian accidents this week reminds us that crossing the street is a learned skill. Sadly, too many pedestrians embark on this tricky passage without thinking it through. Safety experts say walkers — young and old alike — should train themselves to think about just how they are going to get from one side to the other in one piece. Such a plan is proof we’re carrying our “pedestrian walking permit”. Those who cross friendly Bayview Ave. in mid-block have only two lanes to navigate. A judicious use of stopped traffic when the lights are red pretty much guarantees a safe crossing.
LIVE TO SEE THE SPRING
But this is the point no matter where you are. One can’t just bounce off the sidewalk in the expectation that there will be enough time to get to the other side. This can be fatally true on four lane streets like Mt. Pleasant and Eglinton where cars can enter the street unexpectedly at a corner and leave a pedestrian stranded in the middle. Make a plan and judge your crossing time against the amount and speed of traffic. Live to see the Spring, okay?
Gardiner closed this weekend from Carlaw to Highway 427

The Gardiner Expressway will be closed all weekend from Carlaw Avenue and Highway 427 for annual maintenance. Closure occurs at 11 p.m. on Friday and remains in place until 5 a.m. on Monday. Motorists are advised to use Lake Shore Boulevard, the Queensway, King Street, Bloor Street and Evans Avenue.
Woman pedestrian, 63, fatally struck at Eglinton and Hanna

Jeep SUV sits in eastbound lanes of Eglinton east of Hanna Rd.
A 63-year-old woman was killed on Eglinton Ave. East at Hanna Road Thursday evening when she was struck by a car. The accident scene was a short distance east of Hanna Road where a black car facing eastbound was later stopped in the eastbound lane as police did reconstruction. Traffic was being diverted along Sutherland, Parklea and Hanna with Eglinton being re-opened overnight. There was no LRT construction restriction at that point. Police said Thursday was one of the most dangerous mornings in months for pedestrians. Ten people were hit by drivers before noon. Seven were hit in one hour alone.
Ali Velshi to join MSNBC lineup starting immediately

Ali Velshi
Ali Velshi has been hired by MSNBC starting this week, channel president Phil Griffin announced Tuesday. Velshi is a Northern Secondary School alumnus and his sister, Ishrath Velshi, lives locally and was a candidate for Council for Ward 26 in 2014. His father Murad Velshi was MPP for Don Mills from 1987 to 1990. As a young reporter, Ali Velshi was employed by CFTO-TV and by the CTV Network. He most recently worked for Al Jazeera America, which closed down earlier this year. He worked for CNN and in 2011 hosted American Morning in an anchor-trio with Carole Costello and Christine Romans. In making the announcement, Griffin said Ali Velshi’s “sharp economic analysis will be a valuable asset to MSNBC as we dig deeper into every angle of the news and build on our ratings momentum in all dayparts”.
