Darling Sisters gowned spectres at 384 Belsize haunt

What must be among the premier bits of Halloween entertainment for many South Bayview residents each year has been staged once again at 384 Belsize Drive. This year’s tableau and terrifying tale tells of the Three Darling Sisters trampled to death during a fire panic which struck an elegant dance for junior misses in 1912. The same attention to detail is present in the presentation of the Darling sisters, Marion, Meredith and Margaret, as we have seen other years. See: Creepy Peter Pencil Eater finally dispatched by lead (corrected).

The Darling Sisters
The Debutante Sunflower Festival Ball
In 1912 at the Van Shuster Hall
250 young women in gowns
Paraded in rows, on staircases down
The band played Old Misty
Then men took their hands
But suddenly tragedy altered their plans
A fire erupted, and ran up the drapes
Instantly smoke had devoured the place
All pushed, shoved and ran out tiny escapes
…but, three darling sisters
…were trampled in place…
Now Meredith, Marion, and Margaret, by chance
Can be seen on the ruins as
…their ghosts rise to dance.

Pickering girl has close call after getting off the school bus

A Pickering girl has had a close call in a situation where everyone it seems might have paid closer attention. Little Rebecca Hillier got off the school bus near her home and for whatever reason doesn’t cross the street with the gang. The bus driver retracts the guard and, according to some, waves Rebecca across the street. You can see the girl pause before she crosses and she seems to be looking at the driver. Then she goes and that’s when a car comes out of nowhere and brushes her backpack as it passes. The driver seems most at fault. He absolutely should have come to a full stop. Listen to Rebecca’s mom in the video below. The actuality by the way comes from a camera on a neighbor’s house.

October Surprise as temperatures sneak back to August

24-feat

Warm temperatures are lulling people into a shirtsleeves mood at what is normally a warm-sweater time of year. It is an October Surprise and it cannot last. It was 24 Centigrade in Midtown at 1 p.m. and some forecasts were suggesting a record-breaking 27 might be possible. The Weather Network predicted a possible high in that range but we shall see. That would be double the high of 13 expected this time of year. The WN predicts 19 for Wednesday.

James Regan evicted from flat at Avenue and McMaster

As reported by the CBC, the “professional tenant” James Regan, has been evicted for a third time. The latest case being the documented tenancy in a flat at Avenue Rd. and McMaster Ave. in the Republic of Rathnelly. The account is very lively and no doubt some will find it amusing notwithstanding Mr. Regan’s distress. He owes the landlord $10,000 but she is said to be confident at least that by October 24, the eviction date set by the Landlord and Tenant Board, she will be able to re-rent the apartment for a profit. Mr. Regan accused the board of being anti-semitic because it would not give him a further delay on grounds his lawyer had a Jewish holiday conflict but there was no evidence of this so the board dismissed it. Beach cyclist uses foam “noodle” to help drivers avoid him

A cyclist from the Beach, Warren Huska, has attached a pool noodle (that’s accessory used in swimming) to his bicycle to help motorists gauge their distance from him on busy roadways. It seems to work,. He pedals 18 kilometres from to work in North York daily and since he has been noodle-protected Huska says he has noticed a great difference in the care with which drivers skirt him on the road, changing lanes to make sure they don’t hit the noodle. He speculates that this useful measure has not been employed by other cyclists because it is not very cool looking, or maybe because it is a nuisance to install and keep secure.

Jays face elimination as bats fail to connect in Game Three

The Blue Jays bats were dead silent. Meanwhile Mike Napoli homered and drove in two runs to put the Indians in the driver’s seat all through the game. It seemed the Jays had caught a break when Indians starter Trevor Bauer began to bleed all over the field from his injured finger. John Gibbons had to complain to the chief referee that the ball was being sullied with the pitcher’s plasma (below). Final score Cleveland 4, Toronto 2. They are down 3-0 with a last chance tomorrow.

First October Apple Fest this Saturday and Sunday

By Cecelia Pye
Special to the South Bayview Bulldog

The Bayview Leaside BIA is hosting the first-ever October Apple Fest. This festival is a celebration of everything apple to pay tribute to the apple orchards that once graced our neighbourhood, like the Lea and Lawrence family farms. The Lea family maintained a large apple orchard on their 200-acre farm. The Lawrence family farms on the west also boast a rich history in apples.

October Apple Fest will take place this Saturday, October 22 and Sunday October 23 from 11 am to 5 pm along Bayview Avenue from Davisville Avenue to Soudan Avenue. There will be apple décor, apple cider and apple specialties. Feast your eyes on apple street art by the Toronto-based chalk artist Victor (#WhatsVictorUpTo). Listen to the sweet sounds of musicians playing both violin and banjo along Bayview Avenue, as well as a special student duet at Cavatina Violin Studio. Find the apple in your eye in the apple décor created by the Bayview Pixies.

There will be a number of a-peel-ing events and treats from the BIA members including salted apple caramel scones from Lit Espresso Bar, apple martinis at Original’s, apple treats for dogs at the Leaside Animal Clinic, apple spread at Dolce & Gourmando, cold pressed apple juice from Refuel Juice Bar and appletree smoked cheddar at Alex’s Farm Products.

There is also a special kids crafts and Lego drop off event at Bamboo Bay. Kids can build and create apple art for an hour and a half while parents are free to shop and stop for a bite to eat.

Don’t be a crab apple and join the fun at October Apple Fest!
