Indians baffle Blue Jay batters in 2-1 ALCS Second Game

It just seemed to get worse as the game went on. Cleveland pitching had Blue Jay batters swinging at air and going down one, two, three. It was all too reminiscent of the September shut down of Jays hitting. Francisco Lindor singled home Rajai Davis in the third inning for the scoring run, and four Cleveland Indians pitchers combined to keep the Toronto Blue Jays quiet in the 2-1 win.

DEVON TRAVIS OUT

Devon Travis has an injury to his right knee which is more serious that he believed. As a result he is out of post season play, the damage being revealed by tests run today in Toronto. The Blue Jays second baseman suffered a new injury in his already-damaged right knee during Friday’s ALCS opener. Justin Smoak has taken his place. The Blue Jays had been hopeful Travis might heal sufficiently to get back in the game. But an MRI done early today shows there is even more serous damage causing the pain Travis complained about. Doctors ordered him out of the game and the team got the news during today’s ALCS second game in Cleveland.

Soft open for 40,000 sq. ft. Loblaws at Eglinton-Dunfield

Loblaws has quietly opened its large new store on the second level of the podium at the Madison Condominium on Eglinton East between Dunfield Ave. and Lillian Street. There was little fanfare Friday as business began at the Midtown location. Traffic was brisk Saturday with many people finding the store open by accident. The location has a similar feel to the Maple Leaf Gardens store and other ultra-new locations. Large signage declares the presence of sushi, fish and so on.

ORANGE ENAMEL CARTS

The carts at the Madison Loblaws are of the orange-enamel finish seen at MLG. No harsh metal buggies at this flagship. The LCBO is also scheduled to open at the Madison. Loblaws occupies the entire 40,000 square foot second level of the podium, which like the first floor, has a ceiling level that is the equivalent of two floors. The LCBO is also scheduled to open at the Madison in a unit said to be 7,500 square feet on the main level.

OFFICIAL OPENING OCT. 21

Staff at Loblaws were eager to tell of the official opening set for Friday, October 21, at which there will be music and a good deal more fuss and favours for customers. Perhaps “Mr. Weston himself” will be there one clerk teased. The Madison is promoting “some of  the biggest names in retail” for the spaces and notes “three dedicated elevators” and the open escalator pictured below. For those with a little recall and perhaps nostalgia for the “old” Eglinton Ave., the Madison sits mainly on the site of the York Theatre plus parking and a few random low-rise offices down at the Lillian end. Five years since October fire that hit Leaside Cleaners

It is five years since Leaside Cleaners at 1540 Bayview Ave. was struck by a rolling ball of flame from a hydro transformer which had been hit by lightning during a thunderstorm. The fire destroyed Leaside Cleaners and ultimately led to the closure of the business. It also severely damaged The Flower Nook next door and forced the well-known local business to move over to Wicksteed Ave for a while. Today the owners of Flower Nook recall the fire on their Facebook page (embedded). See below and the rest of the story.

The early evening fire also caused heavy smoke damage to McSorley’s, the NIMA money exchange and Bonnie Byford Real Estate. Over time, the clean-up brought many changes. NIMA closed and Sport Clips and Smokin’ Cigar joined the ranks along this busy part of the street. Below is the picture published by the South Bayview Bulldog at the time.

An accomplished Bayview Pixie is a Jill of all Trades

The Bayview Pixies are a hearty band of horticultural handy gals who are committed to looking after the flowers and greenery on Bayview Ave. for the BIA. But this happy band, conceived by Debra Kuchme, turn out to be valuable Jills of all trades. Here we see a sign, one of many they created which will decorate trees on our favorite high street during the forthcoming Apple Fest on the weekend of October 22 and 23.

YOUR WORLD: Clumsy man does £5,000 in damage

Your World can be very funny. And even though it is not nice to laugh at the distress of others, we defy you to stifle a guffaw as this customer of a TV store in Cornwall, England turns into a one-man wrecking crew while looking at the television sets. He does about £5,000 ($8,026) damage in less than five seconds. The poor fellow was crouching down looking at televisions in the St Austell branch of HBH Woolacotts, when he lost his balance, beginning a disastrous sequence of tumbling televisions. A curved Samsung and two Panasonic TVs were among the casualties. In the Netherlands, that liberal and easy-going land is about to see the trial of a right-wing politician for saying the country needs fewer Moroccans. Such is the state of Europe in 2016. And in Thailand, the much-loved late King Bhumibol Adulyadej has been mourned during a Buddhist ceremonial washing of the deceased’s body. The king’s heir, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn participated. He is said by some Thai to be a playboy. They ask if he can be king. That’s your world on this Friday.

“Clown” threats now come in short pants say Peel cops

Peel police have given an 11-year-old boy a good talking to about threats to his classmates and others. A Mississauga public school received a threat of a clown-themed nature by way of social media. As a result of their investigation, the boy was identified as being responsible for the threats. A reasonable warning was issued: “Parents are reminded to be proactive and speak with children regarding the effects of pranks and to continue to contact police if a threat to a student’s safety is made.”
