LCBO to sell liquor online with delivery by Canada Post

It’s seldom that a monopoly agency with the network of neighborhood stores like those of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario feels the need to sell online as well, but the LCBO will do just that. Now customers may have liquor and other goods delivered to their homes by Canada Post. Finance Minister Charles Sousa said the creation of LCBO.com shows the government-owned liquor agency’s commitment to evolve and modernize, and will provide greater convenience for consumers. He noted the opportunity for consumers to get specialized wines and other products off the online menu which may not be in their local stores.

 

G-20 cop to appeal conviction of discreditable conduct

Many people may wish Supt. David (Mark) Fenton well as he appeals convictions on two counts of unlawful exercise of authority and one count of discreditable conduct under the Police Services Act in connection with detentions of crowds at the G20 riots. Fenton’s lawyer will argue that it was an error to permit the participation of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association at the hearing. Fenton was characterized as a malevolent cop who was punishing civilians for being in the vicinity of the G-20 meeting. There was no evidence of this except the interpretation of circumstances by the CCLA. In his appeal, Fenton will say he was  “acting in good faith and with the safety of the city” when he ordered the mass arrests. He will also say the hearing officer failed to account for “actual availability of shelter and protective clothing” for demonstrators held cold and wet at Queen Street and Spadina Avenue outside during a thunderstorm on June 27. Fenton’s lawyers are asking for a new hearing and for Fenton to be found not guilty on all counts.

The Jumpstart Games for Girls, supported by Jumpstart Founder, Martha Billes, took place Tuesday in perfect weather on the playing field of  Valley Park Middle School on Overlea Blvd. Some 350 girls across Jumpstart’s Toronto Chapters gathered to get active in the presence of many friends, especially Olympic role models Marnie McBean, three-time Canadian Olympic Gold Medalist, Rowing and Landon French, President of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities will be available for media opportunities. The Jumpstart Games are an ongoing and very public-spirited activity of the  Canadian Tire Corporation.

Cyclist and cruiser collide, police examine dash cam video

A cyclist and police cruiser collided at Kennedy Rd near Meridian Road overnight. Police are now examining the video from the cruiser’s dash cam. The cyclist is in hospital in serious condition.

Remaining surface parking part of Front-Spadina deal

develop Tridel will develop more than seven acres of land at Front St and Spadina Ave. including one of the few remaining surface parking lots in west-central downtown. The owners of the property are well-known names — RioCan, Allied Properties and DiamondCorp. The land sits adjacent to the Globe and Mail building which was built in 1963 as the home of the now defunct Toronto Telegram. It does not appear to be part of the deal. Work is set to begin next year.

Michael Ford has been elected City Councillor for Etobicoke Ward 2. He replaces his late uncle and former mayor Rob Ford.  Ford, 22, opened an early lead and finished with 69.5 per cent of the vote (6,534) compared with 20.5 per cent (1,918) for second-place Jeff Canning, a small business owner.

Hydro vault fire reported at Brentcliffe and Glenvale

This fire occurred in the electrical vault in the CAMH building under renovation at the top of Brentcliffe next door to the Lyndhurst Hospital. Eighteen people are said to have been in the building at the time of a small explosion in the hydro unit but they left safely.

Astrit Shkurta

Police are looking for Astrit Shkurta, 66, after a dispute of an unknown nature is said to have ended with shots Sunday afternoon. They say a  man went to an address in the Main Street and Danforth Avenue area at around 4:45 p.m. where he fired three shots point-blank at a 29-year-old resident but apparently missed him. The shooter then fled. The targeted man suffered minor scrapes in his haste to escape.  Mr. Shkurta is described as having curly white hair and a medium build, with two gold teeth. He was wearing a red or orange T-shirt or vest and dark pants. Anyone with information about the case is being asked to contact police at 416-808-5400 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

To the east (right) will be parking for a few. The gymnasium of MRU will be demolished to make way for parkland on the corner of Forman Ave . The City purchased this property from the church in recent months. When renovations to the 90-year-old sanctuary of the church are finished a new child centre operated by Monarch Manor will occupy the basement.
