Bridge will go up between Scotiabank Arena, Union Station
by •
Work goes on this weekend and next to raise the new pedestrian bridge between Scotiabank Arena and the new Union Station GO Transit bus terminal. It is 39.5 metres (129.6 feet) long and is scheduled to be lifted into place early Monday. To accommodate the work, Bay Street will be closed from Front Street to Lake Shore Boulevard until 5 a.m. on Monday. GO buses will still be able to access the existing terminal during the closure, however Metrolinx says that some routes will be delayed five to 10 minutes. The bus terminal is expected to be completed in 2020.
Loblaws at 11 Redway will open a Starbucks in coming days
by •
The Loblaws store at 11 Redway Rd. is awaiting the imminent opening of a Starbucks coffee, much the same it would seem as the Starbucks that has proven so popular at Longo’s on Laird Drive. Loblaws appears to have been running a small pilot with Starbucks. There has been one at the 1021 Musgrove store (Victoria Park and Gerrard) since 2016. There’s another in Richmond Hill and one in London. There may be more but what seems clear is that Loblaws own brand of Espresso and Coffee bar has not excited shoppers the way the Green Mermaid does.

French Bakery Bomou preparing to open at 1636 Bayview
by •
Stylish window papering at 1636 Bayview Ave (the former location of Cumbrae’s) indicates that a French bakery called Bomou will open at the address. There’s a pleasant wink of the tease in the window dressing. “We’ll be home by Christmas — hopefully much sooner. Just have to clean up here first,” reads one message to those passing. “Bou-lan-ge-rie — French for bakery, Mou-lin — French for mill. Bo-Mou — Bon Baguette, French lesson over,” says another. Evidence of Bomou elsewhere was found on a Picdeer page on Instagram containing many good-looking baked products. The page is being followed by the Bayview-Leaside BIA. There is also a Facebook account under the name of Le Moulin Artisan Boulangerie. There is also an Instagram account in the name of Negar Sabzevari, “pastry chef, founder of Le Moulin Artisan Boulangerie.”
City will upgrade the aging but wildly popular Toronto sign
by •
The City of Toronto will issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) next week to begin the process to secure a new, more durable Toronto sign on Nathan Phillips Square. It is a well-known attraction and a wildly popular spot for selfies and group photos among residents and visitors alike. The original sign was installed on the public square in front of Toronto City Hall as a temporary structure in July 2015 for the Toronto Pan American and Parapan American Games. Although it was only built to last a few weeks, in response to the sign’s popularity the City extended its presence on the square indefinitely and it has become a Toronto landmark.

K-pop band video closes in on a million looks in few hours
by •
For those who care, the chance to watch the K-pop band BTS preparing for the Billboard Music Awards is compulsory. An ad hoc video (now taken down) which showed the band horsing around with a number of performers, including Drake, was posted early Thursday. At 2 p.m. it had close to a million views, rendered no doubt by the band’s enormous international fan base. BTS was formed in 2013 and took its name from the Korean expression Bangtan Sonyeondan, which translates to Bulletproof Boy Scouts. In 2017, it announced, for English speakers, the acronym would be changing to stand for Beyond the Scene. Now you know.
