York, Durham okayed for Stage 3 but City, Peel left behind

The government will draw a funny line through the GTA Friday, letting York and Durham Regions re-open to Stage 3 of a return to business and socializing closer to normal That means only the City of Toronto, Peel Region and Windsor remain in Stage 2. There are virus hotspots in Toronto, although to be fair, many parts of the City are totally or nearly free of new cases. That includes Leaside and similar Midtown neighborhoods where cumulative cases number in the single digits. Sources told CTV that Toronto, Peel Region and Windsor-Essex Region will remain in Stage 2 for at least another week. That takes us to the end of the month.

135 virus cases reported Sunday

The Ministry of Health says that there were 135 new cases of the virus confirmed on Sunday and one additional death. This number is closer to the number of declining cases seen last week before a spike of cases to a high of 165 over the weekend.

One dead as speeding car causes mayhem on Lawrence East

As Monday dawns police are saying that the nasty fatal crash on Lawrence Ave. East Sunday was caused by a speeding driver in an Audi. He lost control of the vehicle. It is said that he survived with injuries but that a man in the passenger seat is dead. At least two others are injured as well.

Oxford jab works, makes killer T long-term immunity cells

A potential coronavirus vaccine developed by Oxford University in the UK with pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca has produced a strong immune response in a large, early-stage human trial, according to newly released data published Monday in the medical journal The Lancet.

Killer T cells offer long-term protection

The researchers said the vaccine produced both antibodies and killer T-cells to combat the infection. Neutralizing antibodies, which scientists believe is important to gain protection against the virus, were detected in participants after 28 days.

80 percent confidence of vaccine by September

A spokeswoman for Oxford University said on July 15 that the team was awaiting confirmation from a scientific journal of the publication date and time for the data, but gave no further details. The Oxford team previously said they are 80 percent confident they will have a working jab by September.

More than 160 new COVID-19 cases for two days in a row

The Ministry of Health reports 164 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, marking the second straight day the case count has exceeded 160. There were 166 new cases reported on Saturday. In the previous eight days, the number of new cases had not exceeded 130.

Peel Region upsurge

Ministry officials have noted a sharp increase in new cases (48) in Peel Region. That’s up from 13 the previous day while another 37 new cases were reported in the Windsor-Essex area. Peel Medical Officer of Health Lawrence Loh has issued a video begging people to observe the Core Four virus protection measures. Toronto Public Health reported 25 new cases, down from 47 the previous day. The province says it completed 26,890 tests in the last 24 hour period, down slightly from the previous day.

Three dead, many hurt when “Glacier Bus” rolls in Rockies

Three people have died and many others are critically hurt in the rollover of a specially designed Glacier Bus designed to travel safely across the terrain of the Columbia Icefield in Jasper National Park in Alberta. The cause of the Saturday afternoon accident is not given but some people who saw it occur at a distance suggest there was a rock slide. There were 27 people aboard the bus.

Scary close-call as drivers swerve to miss a wrong-way car

Video obtained by City News shows a worst-nightmare moment on the Gardiner Expressway as a driver speeds into traffic going the wrong way. Video is timed to start at 23 seconds just before the close call.

Hot week ahead and a risk of strong thunderstorms Sunday

A hot weather alert has been issued for Toronto through at least Sunday as the City’s sweltering July continues. It is forecast to reach a scorching 33º Celsius before noon. Alert highlights:

Humidex values: high 30s today increasing to low 40s Sunday
