Leaside Ladies Night Out raised $7,500 to start businesses

Upper left, there is much-deserved satisfaction among organizers of the Leaside Ladies Night Out last week. The evening raised $7,500, a sum that ensures the The Neighborhood Organization can help as many as six Thorncliffe Park women learn about and establish a business, develop better sewing skills and provide supplies needed to run their businesses independently. Well done all. At right, a reminder of that epic local tradition known as the Leaside Selection Invitational Tournament. It is a thrilling time for hundreds of kids and great fun to watch. Drop in over the weekend, grab a bite to eat from Andy Elder’s concession in the William Room and watch the action. Below that, are reminders of the East York Town Centre Sidewalk Sale now underway and the Davisville Public School Kindergarten Information Night, tonight at 6.30.

Bitter cold until Sunday as Toronto shovels, plows itself out

The City says road crews are at work non-stop to clear both arteries and side streets from the overnight snowfall. The prediction of 15 to 20 cm seems to have been accurate. Residents will face bitterly cold weather at least until Sunday they tried to dig out and move around. Weather Network Toronto snow plow map shows where they are located

Monday afternoon drive home gripped in snarling snowfall

Monday drive home is shaping up as an epic ordeal. Reports suggest traffic badly slowed or stopped on most arteries. Bayview Ave northbound north of Moore is mostly halted. The City tweeted earlier that based on forecast accumulation, it expected plowing operations might commence between 5 and 7 p.m. and will continue overnight. It advised those on the roads to stay clear of the plows. This enables them to more quickly and efficiently clear the roads. Don’t pass in between plows. Good advice.

Justice for Jassi, Starbucks boss ponders run against Trump

The appalling “honour killing” of Jassi Sidhu will see a day of reckoning in a Punjabi court but there are still those who fear Indian justice is not up to the job. Jassi’s Canadian-naturalized aunt and uncle are on trial there for hiring her killers because she disgraced them in her choice of a husband. Then, US Democrats are jittery at the prospect of Starbucks former chairman Howard Schultz running as an independent. Conventional political wisdom suggests that he would split the anti-Trump vote and ensure a Republican victory in 2020. Below that, a gripping 2017 interview with a flight attendant who figured out that one of her passengers was in trouble. The young woman was in the hands of a human trafficker. Fascinating. And finally, as they would no doubt tell you at Bagel House, bagels are supposed to be hard and chewy not soft and doughy. An interesting New York report on the truth of this food rule.

CBC worries that food guide doesn’t “bridge cultural divide”

Yes, of course. A food guide created by health-minded dieticians should absolutely (somehow) bridge the gap between healthy eating and cultural essentials like milk shakes, garlic bread, Eggs Benedict and roasted marrow bone with onion marmalade. CBC

Kayla Kasak stops 47 as struggling Wildcats tie Sabres 1-1

Leaside Junior Wildcats tied the Stoney Creek Sabres 1-1 at Leaside Arena Sunday afternoon. Leaside held a 1-0 lead for the better part of two periods on a power play goal by Erin Arsenault with the help of Alyson Reeves and Lily Lacey in the first. Grace Nelles assisted by Emmy Lou O’Neil tied it for the Sabres at 13 seconds into the third period with a scorching aerial shot into the near upper corner of the net. It was an enjoyable game even for Wildcat fans who had their fingers crossed in hope of a rare win in this difficult rebuilding season for Leaside. The Sabres are contenders in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League, sitting tonight at seventh in the 20-team league. Kayla Kasak showed remarkable skill in net for the Jr. Wildcats. She stopped 47 of 48 shots, many of them in rapid succession at close range. Her opposite, Andrea Fausto, stopped 17 of 18.
