New hybrid buses generate electricity from diesel engines
by •
Mayor Tory was praising the new clean energy hybrid-electric TTC buses Tuesday. They go into service this month (video below). Though these vehicles are still using fuel (diesel) to produce energy, they use a lot less than the average vehicle. Hybrid buses also incorporate the recovery of braking energy, meaning that energy produced when descending a hill or during braking is fed back to the energy storage system to reuse for propulsion, resulting in approximately 25% fuel reduction and in turn, reduced tailpipe emissions. The TTC plans to have 55 hybrid buses delivered by the end of 2018 and 200 more hybrid buses delivered by the end of 2019. The TTC has also ordered 60 all-electric buses from a Winnipeg supplier These vehicles re-charge along the route at overhead feeders.
Great start to the morning unveiling the @TTCNotices new hybrid electric buses. The federal government and the City of Toronto are making a massive investment of up to $800 million in the #TTC fleet and infrastructure that will help the TTC modernize and improve its service. pic.twitter.com/28LcDx9GPU

How to win a bonspiel? Stay sober and don’t break brooms
by •
A Canadian Olympic gold medallist who was kicked out of the Red Deer Curling Classic over the weekend along with three of his teammates was “breaking brooms and swearing” after the squad showed up to the rink drunk, according to one of the tournament organizers. The incident happened Saturday, when the curling team of Jamie Koe, Ryan Fry, Chris Schille, and DJ Kidby were scheduled to curl at 4:30 p.m. “I don’t know if they were drinking before they got here. I think a lot of us assume they were drinking before they got here; but, they had some booze upstairs and it came time to curl,” said Wade Thurber, manager of the Red Deer Curling Centre. “Jamie Koe was too drunk to play so he didn’t even play. So, they’re curling three-handed and in particular (Fry) was having anger management issues, we’ll call it, breaking brooms and swearing and kind of causing a scene.” Thurber said Fry broke three brooms, disrupting games going on beside him — Calgary Herald

by •
A man in his 20s who is said to have been “dashing” across McCowan Rd. about 1.30 a.m. Tuesday has suffered a broken leg after being struck by a hit and run vehicle. The man had apparently been at a bank ATM near Lawrence Ave. The victim’s brother says the car was possibly a dark-coloured Mercedes. Police searched the street but found no debris left behind and can’t guarantee the description of the car is accurate since there are no cameras or other witnesses.

Freshii headed for Wicksteed, office pops up on Industrial
by •
Upper left in this South Bayview summary for Tuesday, look for a new Freshii outlet at 45 Wicksteed in the SmartCentre. Celine McMahon of the casual salad and healthy food restaurant chain, tips The Bulldog to this opening expected in the New Year. Welcome Freshii. Upper right, don’t look away for a second or someone will build another commercial centre in the Leaside industrial lands. This one, called Leaside Works, popped up overnight. It’s at the corner of Industrial St and Esandar Drive. They call the units commercial condos. Still on the right, two shots of a visit Monday by 45 Leaside High School students to the U of T Physics Department. The kids toured the place and checked the telescopes. Centre left is the shining face of Zarah Manavi, a Grade Eight student of Northlea Elementary and Middle School. As told by Susan Scandiffio, Zarah learned to love hockey by watching the Leafs on television. Hey Zarah, a lot of us can say that too. Below that, the Toronto Star has profiled Mayrik at 1580 Bayview. It is a lovely story of a family of Armenian extraction living the Canadians dream. At bottom right, the 2019 calendars are at Bonnie Byford Real Estate, 1536 Bayview. Better get in there.
Millwood closure sees monumental drive home Monday
by •
The closure of the southbound lanes of Millwood Rd. at the railway underpass at Redway Rd. resulted in bumper-to-bumper traffic along Moore Ave. and Southvale Dr. from Bayview Ave to Millwood Rd. during the Monday drive home. The Millwood access to Thorncliffe Park and East York is closed at the railway underpass perhaps until Tuesday night because of a watermain break early Monday. Traffic on all side steets in south Leaside was heavy as drivers tried to find alternatives. Many it seems did not know of the closure. Northbound Millwood into Leaside remains open. Earlier post.

Access from Leaside to Thorncliffe Park and East York on Millwood Rd. has been cut off by a watermain break at the railway underpass south of Laird Drive. Story here.
1974 women hockey pioneers honoured at Leaside Arena
by •
Those present Friday night at the Leaside Sports Hall of Fame at Leaside Arena are basking in the glow of a happy and sentimental evening. Two women’s hockey teams from the Leaside Girls’ Hockey League, established in 1974, were honoured. It was, as described by historians, an offshoot of the Leaside Hockey League, essentially a boys’ organization. The founders correctly observed that there was an increasing demand by girls to play the game. As a result, a fledgling two-team house league was created, featuring the Lancerettes and the Blazerettes as seen above. It was the efforts of these teams which led ultimately to the creation of the Wildcats league. It is now part of a huge network of girl’s and women’s hockey including the professional junior hockey performances of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League. Also inducted were the late Matthew Sayliss, former NHLer Mike McEwen and competitive curler Jan Carwardine. Leaside Sports Hall of Fame for 2018.
The honour roll of women who formed the Lancerettes and Blazerettes is fairly complete. But time has lost track of one or two.
Lancerttes: Barb Edwards, Nancy Mallabon, Ann Brown, Laurie Morton, Betty Ann Armstrong, Shirley Shepherd, Wendy Tunnicliffe, Megan Paul, Lynn Daly, Lisa Ritchie, Ann McGrath and Lynn Ann Gilchrist. Coach: Dave Yarlett. Blazerettes: Debbie Cummings, Susan Clark, Janet Seelig, Lana Dubois, Daniele Spethman, Janet Fehr, Gwen Crampton, Wendy Hall, Cathy Stockman, Sandra Morrow, Julie Gerrard, Pat Lysyk.
Watermain break floods Millwood Rd. at railway underpass
by •
The main access to Thorncliffe Park, East York and businesses such as the Esso car wash and Loblaws on Redway Rd. is closed Monday because of a morning watermain break on Millwood Rd. at the railway underpass. Millwood into Leaside remains open. City water officials say the main may be repaired by the end of the day but they cannot be sure. A 12-inch main, one of two under Millwood at the railway, burst overnight. The heavy traffic normally seen on Millwood southbound must now take one of three routes into Thorncliffe or East York. There is access by way of Wicksteed Rd. and Beth Nealson Drive into Thorncliffe. Drivers headed to East York may wish to take Pottery Rd. across the Don Valley. The longest and most congested route will be along Eglinton and south on Don Mills. Traffic on Wicksteed and Beth Nealson was heavy at midday. Bayview Avenue to Pottery Road is a nice route into East York. Watch the Bulldog for notice as to when the road is re-opened.
