Miroslav Gronych, the 37-year-old Slovakian pilot who is accused of having care and control of an aircraft while impaired, had his case put over to January 25 Thursday. The Sunwing flight was scheduled to leave Calgary early Saturday with stops in Regina and Winnipeg before continuing on to Cancun. Police allege Gronych, the captain, was found slumped over in his seat and then escorted off the plane. Gronych was released on $1,000 bail and was ordered to turn in his passport. He was also prohibited from flying a plane in Canada while on bail.

Evidence is growing that some cases of peanut allergy can be avoided by starting children on peanut foods early in life. The modern concern for this affliction follows better-testing developed in the second half of the last century. It became best practice for kids to avoid things like peanut butter. But now doctors say many cases of full-blown allergy are avoidable if a careful regime of peanut foods are given early enough. In this AP video, a family is finding that their daughter is likely to never have to worry about it. But their sons are at risk because they were introduced to peanuts too late in life.

Anthony Cirelli had a goal and an assist and subbed-in goalie Carter Hart made 28 saves as Canada downed Sweden 5-2 in a semifinal at the world junior hockey championship at Montreal’s Bell Centre on Wednesday night. Julien Gauthier, with two, Mitchell Stephens and Dylan Strome also scored for Canada. CBC

Leaside Wildcats Captain Emma Pye has this trick she likes to play on opposing teams. She scores on them when they think they’re running a power play. It seems to begin with just turning her mind to this unlikely sting when others are distracted by, oh you know, the game. Pye (#26) did it again Wednesday night in exhibition play against the Ryerson Rams at Mattamy Arena. It is the sixth time in her career in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League that the Wildcats forward has stunned opponents this way. Just when they think their 5 to 4 player advantage on the ice is about to yield a goal, Pye is down at their end doing just that for Leaside. Emma Pye led off the scoring against Ryerson and her teammates chimed in as well to win the good-natured match 5-1. Other Leaside goals came from Mariah Hinds, Kristin Della Rovere, Myah Bowal and Chloe Gonsalves. Last year, by the way, the score was reversed with the varsity girls winning 5-1.  Times change.

Fire has destroyed a home on Scarborough Crescent near Kingston Road and Midland Avenue Wednesday. It appears that the occupants escaped safely. The fire caused TFS personnel to ring a second alarm.

An immigrant family which operated the Belsize Convenience store at 1987 Yonge Street north of Davisville Ave. has left a touching thank note to the community as the store closed. All the circumstances are not known at this posting, but the sentiment contained in the note is a heart-warming gesture and evidence of superior people. The family is believed to have been named Kim. The note came to light because area resident John Murray took a photo of it and posted it on his Twitter account. The note reads in full:

We would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all of our customers and neighbours for using and loving the Belsize Convenience store for the last 14 years.  We would like to thank you all for making our family’s settlement and establishment in CANADA away from our homeland a successful journey. Some late entries here for the holidays and how we spent them. Mary Fragedakis (Ward 29) was with friends at the seniors Christmas dinner at East York Recreation Centre on Pape Ave.

Leaside Junior Wildcats will return to the ice Wednesday for an exhibition game against the Ryerson Rams women at Mattamy Arena in the MLG building at Carlton and Church. This match up is an annual event and is a chance for those who haven’t seen the facility at Mattamy to take a look. The puck drops at 5.30  The regular season schedule of the Provincial Women’s Hockey league resumes for the Cats on the weekend of January 14-15 when they meet Burlington and Kitchener at Leaside arena. The Wildcats are currently sitting 7th in the 20-team PWHL.

Two aircraft touched at the wing tips Tuesday night at Pearson Airport. A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight was taxiing to its gate at around 6 p.m. when its wing touched the wing of a parked Air France jet. An Air France spokesperson said that their departing flight was cancelled as a result of the incident. The extent of damage remains uncertain.

Police have posted a Youtube video showing a mentally disturbed woman climbing up onto two cruisers and stomping on the hood and roof of the vehicles. In the second case, she kicks in the rear window and falls inside the car. Then she walks about the corner of Finch Ave. W. and Milady Rd. with police circling her before being taken into custody in a brief struggle. Police are praising the care with which this matter was handled. The officers were PC Christopher Lemieux and PC David Donaldson. The woman was taken to Etobicoke General Hospital. There is vulgar language on this video.
