Full court press as police unleash New Year’s RIDE

New Year’s Eve will see a full court press by Toronto police of the R.I.D.E. program in 33 Division (eastern North York). But you may not wish to trust them as to location.  As everyone knows, the clever police find places to set up from which there no escape if you are an offender. Pottery Road at the bottom of the hill is a favorite spot.  Be warned and keep the designated driver clean.

Police remind us the Alumni Hockey game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2016 and the Centennial Classic game is being played on Sunday, January 1, 2017. All of this is at BMO Field, which is sort of a secret because the event is sponsored by Scotiabank (BNS). In case you didn’t know, or forgot, here’s what it’s all about:  “The Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings will face-off in an outdoor regular-season game at BMO Field in Toronto on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, in the first-ever NHL Centennial Classic..In 2017, the NHL will conduct a year-long Centennial celebration that will feature a variety of ceremonies, recognitions, observances and special events that will highlight 100 years of NHL hockey and also will recognize a number of milestone anniversaries for member Clubs, including the Maple Leafs.” Maple Leafs vs Red Wings

Chain restaurants must post calories starting Sunday

The “activism” of the Ontario government so greatly admired by the Premier will make an appearance on the menus and Internet information of chain restaurants come Sunday. That’s when the Healthy Menu Choices Act of 2015 takes effect. As of New Year’s, any eatery with more than 20 locations will be required to post calories contained in all foods and drinks offered for sale. It seems Tim Hortons many outlets and their licentious Honey Cruller doughnuts (and others) are included. The tempting Honey Cruller is bursting with 20 grams of fat and 350 calories. One only a week for sure.

THIS MAY NOT WORK

But the exercise may not work. The same requirements have been in place in New York City since 2008 and a 2012 study in the American Journal of Public Health concluded posting calories on foods had no direct impact on what foods people chose to buy. Over time, it said, it appears people ignored the labelling altogether. However a more recent  study from Tulane University suggested that the New York City mandate “plausibly reduced the obesity rate by 2.5 percentage points.”

CARNEGIE DELICATESSEN

In New York City the end is coming for the nearly 50 year old Carnegie Delicatessen. Judging by the crowds waiting to get a last taste before the place closes at the end of the year, shutting down will be the only way to stop people from eating the monster smoked meat sandwiches they serve. The Carnegie has seen good times and bad but the owner says it is time to move on. She hopes to sell the Carnegie Deli name on packaged food.

Girl, 10, who died on AC flight suffered sickle cell anemia

The young Canadian girl who died on an Air Canada flight to London was on her way to Nigeria to celebrate Christmas. The 10-year-old, who has been identified only as Madra, suffered from sickle cell anemia, a rare blood disease which makes those who have it susceptible during air flight. In such instances, red blood cells change into a crescent shape that can disrupt blood flow, preventing oxygen from reaching nearby tissues. Authorities have not as yet however stated a cause of the little girl’s death. CBC

With the Yonge St. sinkhole outflanked by an open lane for traffic each way, the adjoining Rebel House tavern has announced that the “drinkhole” is also open. Sinkhole opened Monday at Roxborough Street and seems like it is going to take a while to fix. Previous
