Chain restaurants must post calories starting Sunday

The “activism” of the Ontario government so greatly admired by the Premier will make an appearance on the menus and Internet information of chain restaurants come Sunday. That’s when the Healthy Menu Choices Act of 2015 takes effect. As of New Year’s, any eatery with more than 20 locations will be required to post calories contained in all foods and drinks offered for sale. It seems Tim Hortons many outlets and their licentious Honey Cruller doughnuts (and others) are included. The tempting Honey Cruller is bursting with 20 grams of fat and 350 calories. One only a week for sure.

But the exercise may not work. The same requirements have been in place in New York City since 2008 and a 2012 study in the American Journal of Public Health concluded posting calories on foods had no direct impact on what foods people chose to buy. Over time, it said, it appears people ignored the labelling altogether. However a more recent  study from Tulane University suggested that the New York City mandate “plausibly reduced the obesity rate by 2.5 percentage points.”

CARNEGIE DELICATESSEN

In New York City the end is coming for the nearly 50 year old Carnegie Delicatessen. Judging by the crowds waiting to get a last taste before the place closes at the end of the year, shutting down will be the only way to stop people from eating the monster smoked meat sandwiches they serve. The Carnegie has seen good times and bad but the owner says it is time to move on. She hopes to sell the Carnegie Deli name on packaged food.

Girl, 10, who died on AC flight suffered sickle cell anemia

The young Canadian girl who died on an Air Canada flight to London was on her way to Nigeria to celebrate Christmas. The 10-year-old, who has been identified only as Madra, suffered from sickle cell anemia, a rare blood disease which makes those who have it susceptible during air flight. In such instances, red blood cells change into a crescent shape that can disrupt blood flow, preventing oxygen from reaching nearby tissues. Authorities have not as yet however stated a cause of the little girl’s death. CBC

Hundreds looking for Shepherd mix Sike in Don Mills

Dog Tales Rescue and Sanctuary is on the hunt for Sike. There have been more than 1,450 Facebook shares Thursday. Here is the post: “Sike is a sweet Shepherd mix who was recently adopted from our shelter. Yesterday afternoon, at approximately 3:30, Sike was startled and ran away from his home. Shortly after, he was seen at Leslie and Rippleton, and appeared to be hit by a car. He continued running, and has not been seen since. If you live in this area, please check your backyards, as we believe that he may be hiding. If you see Sike, please call 416-669-5022 immediately. Please do not try to approach him, as he is probably terrified, and this could cause him to run. We are sick with worry, and want to make sure that Sike gets home safely. Thank you.
UPDATE: We have confirmation that the dog spotted at the Queensway was another dog, that has since been reunited with his or her owners. This means we have no confirmed sightings of Sike since yesterday afternoon. Our search has returned to the Lawrence/Leslie area. Special assistant to MPP, Jamie Jennings dead at age 34

James (Jamie) Edward Gibson Jennings has died suddenly in East York. Mr. Jennings was special assistant to Beaches-East York MPP Arthur Potts. Jamie Jennings was 34. He is survived by his wife Alexie and a daughter Adeline. A memorial service will be held on January 3, 2017 at 3 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre (visiting will begin at 2 p.m.) Obituary

Debbie Reynolds dies 1 day after daughter Carrie Fisher

Debbie Reynolds, star of the 1952 classic Singin’ in the Rain, has died just one day after the death of her daughter Carrie Fisher according to the Associated Press. Reynolds broke into the movies in 1950 when she was 17. Two years later she starred with two much old dancers, Gene Kelly who was 40  and Donald O’Connor, then 27. Reynolds was a huge success. Yesterday she was taken to hospital with a medical emergency in Los Angeles.  Debbie Reynolds was 84.

 

Paypal a preferred method for sisters in Nigerian scandal

The Daily Beast website offers details of the mechanics of how sister Jyoti and Kiran Matharoo liked to receive payments from men they allegedly extorted. Paypal was one. It also tells about their webmaster and how he was picked up trying to extort billionaire Femi Otadola. Police nailed the sisters by tracing email they had sent to the webmaster which say cops implicated the two. They were caught with laptops and other devices with incrimarting evidence. The sisters remain in jail, remanded to January 27,  .

Single lane north and south now open on Yonge

City crews worked all night and through morning snow to partially open Yonge St. at Roxborough St. shortly before noon Thursday. There is one lane each for traffic north and southbound. Yesterday a stout structure of two by six timbers was erected at the sinkhole at Yonge and Roxborough Streets. Some called it “Fort Sinkhole”. The hole opened up Boxing Day and investigation by Toronto Works produced concern that they may not have the full story on how to deal with the underlying weakness in the road. Some residents suggested that work done before Christmas by Enbridge may have somehow undermined the sewer system. Wednesday afternoon the roadway was piled with broken pieces of old pipes, concrete and paving. The scene is further animated by television truck transmission towers and water vacuuming equipment. CP24, City News and CTV were all focused on the “fort” Wednesday afternoon. The sinkhole is among few pieces of real news to be covered locally during the holiday actuality drought.
